Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, is rich in history. From coal mine tours and tours of America's oldest brewery to Hawk Mountains historic documentation of bird flight and preservation.
Our region holds onto more history than many places throughout the United States. We hope to show you each and every historic monument, activity, tour, and stronghold within the coal region.
Anthracite is what this county was built on so there is a large amount of history revolving around Irish coal miners and the history of the Irish Gang the Molly Maguires. Additionally with coal came the railroad. While coal was the fuel, the Reading railroad was the engine that drove Schuylkill counties growth and success through the 19th century.

The History Of Schuylkill County PA
Schuylkill County was founded in 1811 and naturally was named after the Schuylkill River which has dutch origins. When the dutch were traveling down the Delaware river they spotted the Schuylkill river. This means hidden river, which is fitting since the river was not seen on their travel up the Delaware River.
Originally Orwigsburg was the county seat. In 1851 Pottsville became the county seat. This is largely due to the railroad reaching that area and with it bringing commerce. Southern Schuylkill county became focused more on farmland while northern regions of Schuylkill county fully focused on the coal industry as well as producing Yuengling beer.
Over the years Schuylkill County has had its ups and downs. The region had pinnacle moments in history where everyone wanted to move to our region. Schuylkill county has also had low points where commerce and profits were lost and the region suffered.
We believe that Schuylkill County is entering a new beginning in its historic timeline. Throughout Schuylkill County's history, we have always persevered through hard work and dedication to our local community. We welcome you to become part of our community or simply visit and view our history.
